Sanctuary
The Drawing Room, San Francisco
Jan 17-Mar 8, 2026
Opening reception Jan 17
The San Francisco Bay Area is home to many ‘Sanctuary Cities’ and has historically been a refuge for many marginalized communities; however, our current political state has fractured the meaning of what sanctuary is and should be. This show considers what our response should be as artists in defining and creating sanctuary.
Medium presents work from the last year and a half on the topic of embodiment and disembodiment in the information age. In our time, the gravitational pull toward the infinite possibilities of the internet has left us paradoxically isolated from one another and estranged from our own physical reality. I find this phenomenon to be an incredibly rich source of artistic inspiration. In preparing for this show I’ve retroactively themed my practice with two guiding questions. The first is simply: what has this disembodiment done to us? In other words, what art is asking to be made which holds a mirror to this quality of modern life? The second is something like: where do we go from here? What is worth noticing, preserving, or honoring about our physical existence as our personal, professional, and social realities shift increasingly online?
These questions have led my practice in several exciting directions and I’m excited to bring them together for the first time to share and discuss them with the audience of this show.
